Kentucky Oaks to air on prime time television

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — A major shake-up is coming to one of horse racing’s most storied traditions.

Churchill Downs announced that the 2026 Kentucky Oaks will be held in primetime for the first time ever, with the race airing Friday night at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock—just one night before the Kentucky Derby.

The Kentucky Oaks, which has been run annually since 1875, traditionally takes place during the day. Officials say the primetime move is designed to expand the sport’s reach and give the all-female race a national spotlight.

While the timing will change, many of the race day’s most beloved traditions will remain—including pink fashion statements, the Survivor’s Parade honoring breast and ovarian cancer survivors, and a focus on women’s health awareness.
