Kentucky-made art and craft available at Governor’s Derby Celebration
FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ)— Fifteen Kentucky artists will exhibit and sell their work during the Governor’s Derby Celebration, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 7, on the lawn of the Old State Capitol.
The chosen artists represent a diverse sampling of more than 300 artists in the Kentucky Arts Council’s Kentucky Crafted program, an adjudicated program that provides assistance to Kentucky visual and craft artists through marketing and promotional opportunities and arts business training.
“The Kentucky Derby is a proud Kentucky tradition, and the Governor’s Derby Celebration in Frankfort always draws a crowd,” said Lori Meadows, arts council executive director. “With that many people in downtown Frankfort, it’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase the best of Kentucky arts and crafts and provide our Kentucky Crafted artists with another outlet to sell their work.”
Boyd County ceramicist Michelle Lyn Strader, owner of Silver Run Ceramics, is in her first year in the Kentucky Crafted program. An equine enthusiast, Strader moved to Kentucky two years ago and appreciates the opportunity to immerse herself in the Commonwealth’s culture and tradition.
“In my current practice, I use a lot of horse imagery, so I’m excited,” Strader said. “Horses are my favorite to draw and carve onto the surface. I’m looking forward to picking and choosing equine-themed art to bring.”
