Kentucky Goes Pink For Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Kentuckians are proudly sporting their pink.

Outside the courthouse in Richmond, breast cancer survivors and their supporters helped paint the town pink for a sixth year in a row.

At a kickoff event Monday afternoon, people learned more about breast cancer detection, signed up for mammograms, and supported friends still battling cancer.

Doctors recommend women who are 40 years old should get a yearly mammogram.

Wilma Rhodus, a 14-year breast cancer survivor, said, "If you never had your mammogram, you should have that done. That’s how I found mine."

Survivors and their supporters then took a walk around Richmond together, where businesses are offering breast cancer awareness specials and deals.

At Liberty Elementary School in Lexington, teachers placed pink ribbons on a large tree in the cafeteria.

Each ribbon has the name of a student’s family member who has battled breast cancer.
