Kentucky county officials want mega dump closed
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Officials in a northeastern Kentucky county are urging state regulators to close a mega dump fed by daily East Coast trash trains.
The Courier-Journal reports residents who have been fighting the dump are encouraged by a unanimous vote by the Boyd County Fiscal Court calling for the dump to shut down, or in the alternative, to seek a wide range of dump restrictions.
Candy Messer, who is active with the Citizens of Boyd County Environmental Coalition, says the vote was "a small victory in a big war."
Boyd County Judge-Executive Steve Towler says the county has experienced problems with the Big Run Landfill outside Ashland for long enough.
By urging the dump’s closure, county officials have shown a willingness to reject more than $1 million a year in revenues.
