Kentucky Blood Center reports critical blood shortage statewide

KENTUCKY (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — The Kentucky Blood Center says it is facing a critical shortage of blood donations across the state.

According to KBC, low donor turnout during the holiday season has put significant strain on the local blood supply. Right now, the blood center says it has less than a half-day supply of O-positive, O-negative and A-negative blood.

Officials say donations are urgently needed to help stock more than 70 hospitals across the Commonwealth.

To encourage donations, KBC says anyone who donates at a donor center by Tuesday will receive two free movie tickets. Those who donate at one of the organization’s mobile blood drives will receive a free Kentucky Blood Center hoodie.

Kentucky Blood Center officials say maintaining an adequate blood supply is critical for emergency care, surgeries and ongoing medical treatments.
