Keeneland sees continued growth at Yearling Sale
LEXINGTON, KY (Sept. 22, 2016) – Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale continued to show strength during its 10th day of selling on Thursday, when the session was topped by an Into Mischief colt sold for $210,000 to J.J. Crupi’s Crupi’s New Castle.
Contributing to today’s positive sale was the sustained participation by major U.S. buyers, many of whom bought during last week’s premier Book 1. Crupi’s New Castle, who represents such leading owners as Vincent Viola’s St. Elias Stable and Mike Repole, spent $724,000 for nine yearlings, among them four of the day’s highest-priced horses, to be the session’s leading buyer. Other prominent buyers to sign tickets for horses today include Ben Glass as agent for Gary and Mary West, Patrice Miller/EQB, PTK LLC, trainer Ken McPeek and Eclipse Award-winning owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey.
On Thursday, the first day of Book 5, Keeneland sold 299 yearlings for $6,772,700 up 3.99 percent from the 10th session of the 2015 sale when 283 yearlings grossed $6,513,000. The average of $22,651 was slightly below last year’s $23,014. The median was down 23.53 percent from $17,000 to $13,000.
Cumulatively through 10 sessions of the 13-day sale, 2,215 yearlings have sold for $266,614,200, a dip of 3.74 percent from the corresponding period last year when 2,359 horses brought $276,960,300. The average of $120,368 increased 2.52 percent from $117,406. The median of $65,000 remained unchanged.
The top-priced Into Mischief colt is out of the winning Songandaprayer mare Galetoire from the family of Grade 1 winner Fact Finder. He was consigned by Baccari Bloodstock, agent.
W.D. North Thoroughbreds went to $200,000 to acquire a colt by Quality Road from the consignment of Upson Downs Farm, agent. The colt is out of the Tiz Wonderful mare Polyester.
The day’s top-priced filly was a daughter of Maclean’s Music out of stakes winner Class Above, by Quiet American, sold to Ken McPeek for $165,000. Consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent, she is from the family of Grade 3 winner Promise Me Silver.
Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent, was the leading consignor, selling 12 yearlings for $535,000.
