Jury reaches verdicts in Marine murder trial

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The verdict is in for two men accused of killing a United States Marine.

Quincinio Canada was found not guilty in the murder of Jonathan Price, while Dawan Mulazim’s fate is still up in the air because the jury couldn’t reach a unanimous decision on the murder charge against him.

Both men were found guilty of three counts of armed robbery in a separate crime the prosecution tried to connect to Price’s murder, but that didn’t stop the two from celebrating the jury’s decision. Dawan Mulazim banged on the defense table as he heard the not guilty ruling for Quincinio Canada. A family member had to tell him to calm down.

The jury decided Canada was guilty of the robbery of a gun at a Quality Inn six days before the Price murder outside Austin City Saloon in Lexington. Prosecutors said that was the gun used to kill Price and shoot his wife. The jury found Canada ‘not guilty’ of all charges related to the Price case.

Duwan Mulazim was also found guilty of the Quality Inn robbery, but jurors could not reach a decision about any of the charges against him in the Price case. Mulazim could be tried again on those charges.

The prosecution argued that surveillance video placed the two ‘near’ the crime scene. The defense argued even if that was true, it didn’t prove they did it. Also, a witness testified Mulazim was with her in a different location when the shootings occurred.

The sentencing phase, where the jury will recommend a sentence for the two men for the Quality Inn robbery convictions, is scheduled to begin Wednesday at 9:00 a.m.
