Judge Orders Defendant Treated For Mental Illness

A southeastern Kentucky judge has ordered a man accused of killing a Somerset defense lawyer to be treated with anti-psychotic drugs, against his will if necessary.

The Lexington Herald-Leader (http://bit.ly/1AhcYu8 ) said 40-year-old Clinton D. Inabnitt’s (in-AB’-nitz) lawyer has filed notice of a potential insanity defense. Inabnitt is charged with murder in the June 27 shooting death of 57-year-old Mark Stanziano.

A psychiatrist testified Tuesday that Inabnitt is schizophrenic and delusional but refuses to take medication to deal with his mental illness.

Pulaski County Circuit Judge David Tapp authorized the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center to treat Inabnitt with the medication.

Inabnitt’s lawyer, Richard B. Leary, said he opposed involuntarily medicating Inabnitt. He says one concern is that the medication could compromise Inabnitt’s ability to participate in his defense.
