Jockey Junior Alvarado suspended and fined after Kentucky Derby win aboard Sovereignty

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW)- Jockey Junior Alvarado has been suspended for two days and fined $62,000 following his ride aboard Sovereignty in the 2025 Kentucky Derby.

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) imposed the penalties after determining that Alvarado struck his mount eight times with the riding crop, exceeding the allowable limit. This violation marks his second offense within a 180-day period, as per HISA’s regulations.

The suspension will take effect on May 29th and 30th, 2025, and Alvarado is required to pay the fine within 30 days. Despite the disciplinary action, Alvarado’s victory in the Derby aboard Sovereignty remains intact.
