Jessamine County Celebrates Black History This Weekend

Jessamine County will hold its 2014 Black History Month Celebration on Saturday, February 15 at 11 a.m. at the East Jessamine High School.

The event includes a presentation of The Meeting, a one-act play that depicts a fictitious meeting between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. and explores the philosophical differences that separated the two men.

The play is a production of Message Theater, an African American theater group that showcases talented black actors and black playwrights, and produces works about the lives of black people, according to a release from Jessamine County.

Past celebrations of the Jessamine County Black History Celebration have included other dramatic interpretations of historical figures and events, including an excerpt of “Blow Ye The Trumpet Blow,” a play about the expulsion of African American refugees from Camp Nelson, a recreation of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, impersonations of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, and performances by the Sankofa Drum Corps of Lexington.

Jessamine County’s Black History Month Celebration event is provided and supported by Jessamine County Fiscal Court.  Complimentary refreshments will be served during the event; no admittance charge or reservations required.  Participants of all ages are welcome.
