Inmate slips cuffs, escapes in Estill Co.

RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ) – Authorities are still searching for an inmate who escaped while being transported to the Estill County Detention Center.

The Irvine Police Department says the inmate, 37 year-old Jason Gay, was being transferred from London Monday night when he slipped out of the handcuffs and ran off.

They say Gay then ran to the water treatment plant in Irvine where he jumped into a pickup belonging to a security guard.

Police say the security guard fired shots at the truck as the inmate drove off. That truck was later found along a road with three blown-out tires.

IPD officers believe he has family in Richmond, and could be heading in that direction – local authorities have already been alerted.

Still at large, Jason Gay has previously been charged for engaging in organized crime, receiving stolen property, possessing controlled substances, driving while under the influence, and some others.

Jason Gay is described as being approximately 5’7” tall and weighing 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing an orange hooded sweat shirt, blue jeans and white shoes.

Due to his actions last night, and his extensive criminal history, Police believe he could be a danger to the public. Armed with a machete that was in the pickup, police advise anyone who sees Jason Gay should report the sighting.

Kentucky State Police can be contacted at 859-623-2404 or 1-800-222-5555.
