IIHS Issues Safest Used Cars For Teens List
They’re known for their safety ratings of new vehicles, but for many families, a new car isn’t in the budget. With that in mind, they’ve compiled a list of the safest used cars for teens.
The IIHS recommends parents follow four main principles when choosing a car for their teen. First, young drivers should stay away from high horsepower; vehicles with more powerful engines can tempt them to test the limits. Second, bigger, heavier vehicles protect better in a crash; there are no minicars or small cars on the recommended list. Third, the IIHS says electronic stability control is a must; the feature helps a driver keep control of the vehicle on curves and slippery roads, and reduces risk on a level comparable to safety belts. Lastly, go for vehicles with the best safety ratings possible.
