House fire leaves six without a home, one injured in Lexington
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — A house fire on Judy Lane left six people without a home and sent one person to the hospital for smoke inhalation Tuesday morning.
First responders from the Lexington Police and Fire Departments arrived on the scene around 6:50 a.m. to find a very active fire.
“Crews arrived on scene pretty quickly, had smoke and flames visible,” said Battalion Chief Kevin Austin of the Lexington Fire Department. “Crews were able to make entry and get a pretty quick knockdown on the fire. It was pretty advanced on our arrival, so the damage is pretty extensive inside,” said Battalion Chief Austin.
Residents say they were asleep when the fire broke out, but one person’s work alarm woke them up just in time.
“If she wouldn’t have woke us up, we would all be dead. We wouldn’t be here,” said Lauren Konkle, one of the residents.
The home was being used as a transitional recovery house for those overcoming addiction.
“We’re all in recovery, so we’re all just starting over, and we really don’t have much,” said Katelynn Stansell. “And what we did have now is gone,” said Stansell.
Residents believe the fire started from a mattress inside the home. Officials say the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Lexington Fire Department has contacted the Red Cross to assist those displaced.
