“I am so grateful they didn’t die.”
Rowan County grandmother recalls hydroplane car accident that injured her daughter and graddaughter
ROWAN COUNTY, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — It’s something that can happen to anyone, hydroplaning on a road, and for one family, the aftermath of their incident continues today.
“I’m so thankful they didn’t die,” says Lorna Lacy who recalls the accident that changed the lives of her daughter and granddaughter.
“So my oldest granddaughter, w- which is my daughter’s oldest child, was in contact with her mother, my daughter Sheena, and, my daughter and my youngest granddaughter, Kinley, were on their way here to visit. And then next thing I know, my granddaughter, the oldest one, Jordan, gets a call from Sheena and says they have been in a accident,” she adds.
Lacy says six days ago, it began to rain as her daughter (Sheena) made her way to Lorna’s home.
Lacy adds, “apparently my daughter had hydroplaned and went off to the side of the road, the right side of the road, and hit the embankment and it flipped her truck at least, at least two times.”
Hydrolaning happens when excess water fills the tread gap in your vehicle’s tires and prevents them from gripping the road.
“They got out of the truck through the windshield. There was no room to get out any other way and so my daughter was just, crying.
We were all crying. It was, it was just horrible,” said Lacy.
Lorna says her daughter Sheena an EMT is back at work with a back brace, a result of the accident, and her granddaughter Kinley had her first day of school on Wednesday, with bruises still on her body.
She said at the time of the accident, both were wearing their seatbelts but their airbags did not deploy.
Lacy also said, “she’s having to work through her pain, to take care of other people. And I, I just want help for her.”
As a result, Lorna has started a GoFundMe to try to help her daughter navigate what comes next financially.
Adding that her granddaughter Kinley has PTSD after the accident.
She says Kinley told her that two days before the accident, “I prayed to Jesus to keep me, my mommy, my daddy, you, and all my family safe.”
And she said, “He must have done that because I didn’t die. We didn’t die.”
Lorna adds that if people can’t give anything, prayers go a long way.
