Hundreds sign petition against tax hike

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) Opponents of a tax increase to pay for school security in Fayette County are making a push to get it on the ballot. Hundreds of people signed petitions today that would allow those living in the county to vote on the tax increase.

The Board of Education already approved it. It will only go to a county wide vote if about 14,000 people sign a petition by the end of the month.

“We just think the voters of Fayettte County ought to have a vote on this and it shouldn’t be just rubber stamped by the School Board with very little public input,” said Organizer Dan Rose.

The average property owner in the county would pay $80 more per year. The district says the money would go to a $13.5 million safety plan the superintendent says would make Fayette County Schools the safest in the country.
