Hundreds participate in freedom march
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The cold weather didn’t stop hundreds of people from marching more than a mile in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
He fought for equal rights and eventually our country saw a change.
Many of the people who are marching believe in the King’s message and now they are fighting for unity.
“Right now we’re a divided country and I think his message really needs to be heard,” said Stephanie Stephenson, participant.
Stephenson brought her daughter and her daughter’s best friend to the march.
The girls are learning about civil rights in school and she thought this would give them a glimpse of a real world example.
“Seeing the diversity, seeing that everybody wants to make this difference, and kind of bring his word to light, I think it’s a great thing to be able to see in this day and time,” said Stephenson.
Lynsey Sugarman participated in the march and it’s something she’s done for years.
Sugarman believes that the whole community should be involved so we can show people that we are one.
“I think Martin Luther King was such an inspiration to everybody and it is great to see all these folks here, marching together, we shall overcome,” said Lynsey Sugarman.
The marchers hope that when hundreds of people are walking for a purpose, it will bring them one step closer to the change they are hoping for.
