House passes bill making it easier to challenge property tax hikes

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – The House passed a bill Tuesday that would make it easier to challenge local property tax increases in Lexington and Louisville.

House Bill 49 increases the number of days allowed for filing a recall petition from 45 to 50 days.

The measure also allows online signatures to be collected and requires them to be aligned with Kentucky’s Electronic Transfer Act.

Currently, signatures can only be collected by manual petition – a daunting task in a county the size of Fayette County – as the law also requires petitioners to meet a threshold of 10 percent of voters from the previous presidential election.

HB 49 now advances to the Senate. The measure can be viewed here.
