House fire displaces family of nine

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Lexington family is displaced, after a fire caused extensive damage to their home.

The Lexington Fire Department credits a working smoke detector to helping four people escape the house fire that occurred Monday evening on Devonia Ave.

They say they arrived to the house around 6 p.m. and fire was blowing out of the second floor of the structure, but fortunately, firefighters were able to quickly put out the flames. They did have to cut a hole in the roof to ventilate the smoke, and check the attic for any hidden fires.

All four people home at the time were able to escape with no reported injuries.

According to authorities, it’s not clear yet what caused the fire, but there was considerable damage to the bedroom, as well as the second story of the house.

The fire department says a family of nine lived in the home, but they will not be able to stay there for a considerable amount of time due to the extent of the damage.  The Red Cross is helping to find them a place to stay.
