Host of track & field Cats readying for Rio
RIO DE JANEIRO – Kentucky Class of 2014 alumnus Andrew Evans will be the first of six Wildcats with attachments to the UK track and field program to compete at the Games of the XXXI Olympiad as the athletics meet begins on Friday.
Evans will take three throws in qualification group A beginning at 8:30 a.m. Evans is slated to throw third, and he will need to better a mark of 214’10”/65.50m to qualify for Saturday’s final or if 12 athletes don’t reach that mark he can finish with a mark inside the top-12 of qualification to advance.
The networks of NBC own the broadcast rights for the Olympic Games in the United States. Discus qualification is slated to be streamed live via nbcolympics.com and the NBC Sports app. Rio2016.com will provide results.
Evans is the lone Wildcat on the 2016 United States Olympic Track and Field Team. He placed third in the discus at Olympic Trials. Evans capitalized on a solid throw of 200-feet, 10 inches/61.22 meters on his first attempt to make the team at Trials last month in Oregon.
Wildcats Jasmine Camacho-Quinn (Puerto Rico), Leah Nugent (Jamaica), Rondel Sorrillo (Trinidad and Tobago), Luis Orta (Venezuela) and Mikel Thomas (Trinidad and Tobago) are also competing in athletics at the Rio Olympic Games.
Camacho-Quinn will complete her standout freshman season by representing Puerto Rico at the Games. She, and alumni Nugent and Sorrillo all train at Kentucky under head coach Edrick Floréal’s direction.
Evans, who placed third at the USATF Outdoor Championships last season but missed out on the American team that travelled to the IAAF World Championships because he did not record the standard mark at any point during the season, qualified for his first Senior U.S. Team for a major competition.
Evans eclipsed the Olympic Standard with a throw of 214’7”/65.41m in Chula Vista, California, earlier this season.
The athletics portion of the Olympic Games will run from Friday until Sunday, Aug. 21, which is the day of closing ceremonies.
