Historic fixtures stolen from Lexington firehouse

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A few fixtures of history were stolen from one of Lexington’s oldest firehouses Thursday morning.

The iconic red globe light fixtures date back to the 19th century. “They let [people] know the firemen are in quarters,” says Lexington Fire’s Lt. Nathan Vanderhoof.

Firefighters at Station 6 say they first noticed the globes missing when they returned from a medical call around 1 a.m. Thursday.

“It’s kind of like an invasion, technically this is the city’s house but we’re charged with taking care of it, keeping it up and make it run every day, it’s stealing a part of our hearts and our home,” Vanderhoof says.

Firefighters filed a police report and Lexington Police say detectives are investigating. In the mean time, firefighters have replaced the typical white light bulbs, that sit inside the globes, with red bulbs.
