Historic cabin in Lincoln County discovered during demolition project

STANFORD, Ky. (WTVQ) – Something old is the new talk in Lincoln County.

Crews tearing down a condemned house made a remarkable find.

Staff from the the University of Kentucky Archaeological Survey made their way to an old cabin on Hustonville Street. The cabin’s age dates back to the 1800s.

“These buildings can tell a story. You know, maybe learn about who lived there, how did their family evolve, how did they grow, how did they change the building,” said Dr. David Pollack with the Kentucky Archaeological Survey.

Dr. Jay Stottman says the home likely housed poor to middle class people.

“You see the high style mansions of the rich people who lived and their buildings typically last a long time. And it’s pretty rare we get to see the everyday people, their buildings being preserved this long,” said Dr. Stottman.

Jane Vanhook, president of the Lincoln County Historical Society, loves all the attention the cabin’s received since word of the discovery spread.

“It has been the most exciting thing. It’s just great to see people stop here and look and they’re so excited,” said Vanhook.

The city says it wants to get in contact with the property owner before deciding what to do next.
