Health department reports surge in flu and covid-19

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department is reporting a surge in flu and covid-19 cases.

Health officials say flu cases have more than doubled, reaching the highest total so far this season.

There were 597 lab-confirmed flu cases reported for the week ending February 1st. There were 286 reported the previous week.

Health officials say there were 79 lab-confirmed covid-19 cases during the same period, which is 18 more than the previous week.

The results do not include at-home test kits.

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department on Newtown Pike is giving free flu shots and limited doses of the covid-19 vaccine for those who qualify.
