Hampton among Kentucky’s RNC delegates

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Republicans in Kentucky’s 2nd congressional district have chosen Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton as one of three delegates to the Republican National Convention.

Hampton was elected Saturday morning during the 2nd Congressional District Republican Convention in Bowling Green. Hampton was elected lieutenant governor in the fall on the same ticket with Gov. Matt Bevin. She is the first African-American to hold statewide office in Kentucky. She declined to comment through a spokeswoman.

Other delegates selected with Hampton include party activists Jim Skaggs and Todd Inman. Both said they are not committed to a particular candidate should the nominating process reach a second ballot on the convention floor.

Republican delegates are under more scrutiny this election cycle because it is possible no candidate will secure the nomination prior to the convention in June.
