Group presents disabled vet with van

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Petty Officer Third Class Douglas Hill is back behind the wheel, thanks to a gift from Help Our Military Heroes.

Hill’s life changed on July 5th of 2010, while serving with the U.S. Navy.  An accident while he was driving left him with multiple injuries, and the loss of his legs.  Hill toughed it out through five surgeries, two amputations, and eleven blood transfusions.

Today, the husband and father of two was back in the driver’s seat, for a much happier reason, as Help Our Military Heroes presented him with a wheelchair-accessible van at Superior Van & Mobility on New Circle Rd.

The 100% volunteer-based group says they are dedicated to delivering adaptive minivans to wounded post-9/11 veterans by bridging the gap for out-of-pocket van expenses that veteran benefits don’t cover.
