Grant will help Kentuckians with paralysis be more independent

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – People with paralysis may be able to become more independent because of a smart-home technology loan.

Due to a $75,000 grant, a Kentucky program says it will loan starter kits for three months to Kentuckians with paralysis.

The Kentucky Assistive Technology Services Network says it will help borrowers find ways to buy their own equipment at the end of the program.

“This smart home technology will increase and enhance an individual’s ability to live independently and reduce their reliance on caregivers and family members to meet their needs,” said Cora McNabb, executive director of the Kentucky Office of Vocational Rehabilitation.

Officials say smart-home technology starter kits, valued from $1,000-to-$1,500 each, include Google Home or Amazon Alexa devices, smart lights and outlets, motion sensors, and carbon monoxide detectors.

People interested in applying for the program should call 1-800-327-5287, or email JamesA.Brown@ky.gov.
