Governor Sets New Education Standards for Science
State leaders are at odds over whether these new science standards make the grade.
Kentucky’s schools will be adopting the ‘Next Generation Science Standards’ in all classrooms.
These standards put more emphasis on modern day science subjects like climate change and evolution.
That’s raising some controversy and disagreements across the Commonwealth.
A state government education subcommittee voted 5 to 1 against the standards saying they were ‘deficient.’
However Governor Steve Beshear overrode the committee’s vote and approved the standards anyway.
Opponents to the standards say there is not enough emphasis put on the proven scientific facts and methods.
Supporters say this bring Kentucky science into the 21st century and teaches kids to think more critically about science.
