Governor: Exponential growth of COVID-19 in the state has stopped

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Governor Andy Beshear says it appears Kentuckians have stopped the exponential growth of the coronavirus in the state by wearing masks, socially distancing and washing their hands.

On Sunday, the governor reported 390 new cases of the coronavirus.  Thirteen of those cases were children age 5 and younger.  Due to limited reporting on Sunday, some statistics won’t be available until Monday.

The state’s total number of cases is now at least 39,315 since the pandemic hit in early March.

The governor also reported three new coronavirus-related deaths on Sunday, bringing the state’s death toll to 813.

The deaths reported Sunday were all women:  A 67-year old from Fayette County, a 73-year old from Perry County and a 91-year old from Franklin County.

Kentucky’s mortality rate is 2.1% compared to 3.2% nationally, according to Kentucky’s Public Health Commissioner, Dr. Steven Stack.

He says the success is a combination of accomplishments, including keeping the virus from spreading out of control, excellent health care and more widespread testing than many other states.

Dr. Stack did urge Kentuckians not to forget how quickly the virus spreads and how dangerous it is.
