Governor Beshear deploys Kentucky National Guard to assist food banks statewide
FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Governor Andy Beshear has authorized the Kentucky National Guard to assist with staffing shortages at food banks across the state as families continue to face food insecurity.
The move comes as the federal government begins processing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments starting Thursday. Governor Beshear says this action will help ensure families in need have access to food while federal assistance resumes.
Last week, the governor also signed an executive order allocating $5 million to support food banks throughout the Commonwealth after the federal government announced it would only partially fund SNAP benefits.
Beshear emphasized that the combined efforts between state funding and the National Guard’s support are aimed at preventing Kentucky families from going hungry during this transitional period.
