Governor Andy Beshear declares state of emergency ahead of heavy rain in Kentucky

2 to 5 inches of rain expected for the state

FRANKFORT, Ky (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of significant rainfall expected to hit the state over the weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for all of Kentucky, which will be in effect from Saturday morning through midday Sunday. With the additional rain expected on top of recent downpours, Kentucky is bracing for 2 to 5 inches of rainfall, with river flooding being a primary concern in various regions of the state.

“We want everyone to be careful,” Gov. Beshear said. “The amount of rain coming down will make it hard to drive, and flash flooding, especially across our roads, can create dangerous conditions. And remember, don’t drive through standing water, it can have a current, and it is incredibly dangerous.”

Governor Beshear activated the Kentucky Emergency Operations Center (KEOC) and placed National Guard units on standby. The state’s Transportation Cabinet is also on high alert, working alongside local emergency management teams to monitor the situation and keep residents informed.

In light of the impending storm, Governor Beshear has also implemented the state’s price gouging laws to protect Kentuckians from unfairly high prices on goods and services during the emergency.
