Gov. Beshear warns tax filers about postal changes and fraud prevention updates
FRANKFORT, KY. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Governor Andy Beshear is alerting Kentuckians about federal fraud prevention updates and changes at the United States Postal Service that could impact tax filers.
According to the governor, postmarks may no longer reflect the exact date mail is dropped off at the post office. That date is typically used to determine whether tax filings were submitted on time.
Officials warn that mailing delays could potentially lead to penalties or interest if tax returns arrive after the deadline.
Beshear also said the Kentucky Department of Revenue will implement enhanced national fraud prevention requirements beginning next month, which could impact how tax refunds are processed.
The governor recommends filing taxes electronically to help avoid potential delays.
The deadline to file federal taxes this year is Wednesday, April 15.
