Gov. Beshear lays out plans for second term

FRANKFORT, Ky (WTVQ)- It’s been only hours since Kentucky governor Andy Beshear was elected to a second term. Beshear beat Republican gubernatorial nominee Daniel Cameron Tuesday night in the state’s general election.

Now, as he prepares for another four years, he’s laying out his goals for the Commonwealth.

“Today, we are one day post an election that I think last night truly showed who we are as Kentuckians,” says Beshear.

Beshear joined his family and Lieutenant Governor Jacqueline Coleman in a press conference at the Capitol Rotunda Wednesday.

He began going over major accomplishments from his first term. Among those: three major infrastructure projects, economic developments, record unemployment and budget. But he says the work isn’t over just yet.

“Today, we are back here at the capitol getting back to work,” says Beshear.

Beshear’s plans now include working with Kentucky General Assembly leadership to help make investments in the state’s public education system.

“That begins with the educator raises that are absolutely critical for moving our state forward. The second piece in universal pre-K,” says Beshear.

Beshear says he also wants to continue to attract new jobs and industries to the state.

Lastly, Beshear says he also wants to continue efforts to rebuild every home for each family impacted by natural disasters in eastern and western Kentucky.

“I pledge today to continue to be a governor that serves everyone. I will never view the state as having red counties or blue counties. But just counties of our Kentucky families. These next four years are going to be a great opportunity. An opportunity to move forward, not right or to the left, but forward to stop the fighting, to push away the division and remember we’re Kentuckians,” says Beshear.

Republicans are now reacting to Beshear’s re-election. Senate President Robert Stivers releasing a statement saying in part quote:

“I want to congratulate Governor Beshear on winning the governor’s race.”

“While we are disappointed in the outcome of the gubernatorial election, nothing substantial will change as it relates to the efforts of the Kentucky General Assembly. I am hopeful that in his second term, though, the Governor will choose to work collaboratively with his co-equal branch of government. This General Assembly remains committed to a fiscally responsible budget and creating an environment for economic growth.”

“Regardless of the outcome, the Republican supermajorities in the House and Senate are the ones who have delivered on tax reform and a large budget reserve.  We are committed to the conservative values and policies we have championed since 2017. Our constituents can remain confident we will bring forth legislation to protect Kentucky families from some of the extreme agendas of the Beshear and Biden administrations.”
