Gov. Beshear joins in on historic Selma March
FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Hundreds of people marched the Capitol’s streets Sunday for the 55th anniversary commemoration of “Bloody Sunday”.
On March 7, 1965, hundreds of people marched from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in a fight for equal voting rights.
Alabama State Troopers attacked marchers that day with whips and nightsticks, resulting in multiple injuries and arrests, marking the day “Bloody Sunday” in history.
This march led to the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which protected African Americans’ right to vote.
Governor Andy Beshear marched too Sunday, as they re-enacted a historic day in American history.
“We’ve come a long way since Selma, but there’s still a long way to go,” says Gov. Beshear.
