Gov. Andy Beshear delivers State of the Commonwealth Address

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) — The governor highlighting many topics among them, the growth of the states economy.
Governor Andy Beshear also spoke on some of his budget proposals that include universal PRE-K and a raise for public school employees, things he has been adamant about throughout his re-election campaign.
Beshear really stressing the message of unity and moving forward together.

“Many of you are excited that I’ll be serving as your governor for the next four years and the rest are excited that I am now term limited,” says Governor Beshear with a bit of humor as he delivered his State of the Commonwealth Address on Wednesday night, highlighting economic achievements during his first term as governor.

“We set a record for private sector investment, more than $28.7 billion the most secured during the tenure of any governor,” he says.

Adding that the work that’s been done, has been a team effort from both the executive and legislative branches.
One of the most significant accomplishments according to Beshear, “Ford and its partner BlueOval SK are building the two largest electric vehicle battery plants on planet Earth in Glendale, Kentucky.”

And while the governor highlighted the achievements under his administration, he also spoke about his budget proposal.

“In my budget proposal, I added $75 million to the Eastern Kentucky safe fund to continue rebuilding efforts and added another $10 million of general fund to the affordable housing trust fund,” said Beshear.

He says in his budget he is including an 11% raise for public school employees.

“Kentucky ranks 44th in starting teacher pay and 40th in average teacher pay that is unacceptable,” added Beshear.

While also investing in transportation for children and, “if we want more bus drivers, let’s pay them more and let’s provide the support our school districts need. As for our youngest learners, it is time to pass universal Pre K for all of our Kentucky 4-year-olds.”

Beshear says he also wants to continue investing in clean drinking water as well as infrastructure, while also trying to ensure an expansion of Medicaid.

But also protecting first responders and law enforcement officials, “my budget once again increases the pay for our Kentucky State Troopers and officers, we’re also proposing a raise in the training stipend. Further requesting $35 million to fund grants for body armor to better protect our law enforcement officers and first responders on those days when they run towards danger,” said Beshear.

Attorney General Russell Coleman releasing the following statement, ” “We look forward to reviewing the proposals and working closely with leaders in the General Assembly to pass a responsible budget that prioritizes public safety and support for our law enforcement. I’m particularly pleased to see the proposed increase in funding for the Kentucky State Police and the courageous men and women of law enforcement across the Commonwealth. I fully support providing those who carry a badge with the resources and equipment they need to protect families and keep themselves safe.”
