Golfers Raise Money For Autism

Community members are teeing off Wednesday at the Griffin Gate Marriot to take a swing against autism.

Greg Stumbo, Speaker of the House, and his wife Mary Karen held the sixth annual Speak Out "Fore" Autism golf tournament.

John Francis golfed in the tournament and described his great-nephew as battling with autism since birth.

"It’s challenging for the whole family," said Francis.

In the last five years the Stumbo’s non-profit foundation has raised $150,000 for autism research.  That money has gone to The Highlands Center for Autism in Prestonsburg.

This year, some of the money raised will go to a new autism program in Lexington at Cardinal Hills.

"The school teaches them social skills.  They teach the children to learn.  An autistic child can learn, it’s just they learn a different way," said Stumbo.

According to the Center for Disease Control one in 88 children are affected by autism.
