Pipe bomb container found; person of interest questioned

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WTVQ) – There were some anxious moments Tuesday afternoon after Georgetown Police say a maintenance man mowing the lawn outside International Crankshaft Inc. on Lemons Mill Road found a homemade pipe bomb container.

Assistant Georgetown Police Chief Robert Swanigan says the suspicious device was everything a bomb needed except the explosive material.

Investigators say the bomb container had a threatening message on the outside.  The Lexington Police Department’s Hazardous Device Unit used its robot to do most of the handling.

Investigators say the robot x-rayed the pipe bomb container and determined there wasn’t anything inside.  Officials detonated the device in a contained area.

Police describe the object as an eight inch lead pipe with two caps ends and a fuse inside, but nothing that could explode.

Investigators say a “person of interest” was brought-in for questioning in the case.  No name was released by police.

Authorities closed outbound Lemons Mill Road during the investigation for about three hours.
