Georgetown family closing in on China adoption date

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WTVQ)- More than two months since ABC 36 last checked in with them, the Lumpkins family, from Georgetown is getting closer to bringing home the sister of one of their adopted daughters from China.

“It’s been hard on the nerves,” admits Lisa Lumpkins. She and husband, Gene sit in the living of their Georgetown home, five children around them, including one biological child. The other four are adopted from China.

In May, the Lumpkins shared with ABC 36, their journey after they discovered one of their children, Aubrey, who has cerebral palsy, had a sister in China who also lives with the condition. There was no question what they were going to do.

Thus started the Lumpkins’ mission of bringing home Avery before she “ages out.” China’s government only allows children to be adopted to the U.S. up to a certain age. Lisa says a vast majority of the paperwork for their adoption has gone through.

“So hopefully everything will calm down and we’re past all the bumps and we get to the happy and good stuff,” she says.

As for Aubrey, her excitement about seeing her sister in person is palpable. When asked what she would do, the young girl answered quickly.

“Tell her I love her, and hug her, and smile,” says Aubrey. And there are no shortages of smiles for her. Even though walking doesn’t come easy, Aubrey takes joy in spending time at the piano bench and in the pool with her siblings.

During ABC 36’s visit, the Lumpkins shared with us their family is still growing. Recently, they’ve added a fish, a hermit crab, and another sister.

In case you missed that, yes, the Lumpkins are adopting from China again, a young girl with cerebral palsy. They tell us her name is Molly.

Lisa and Gene say they’re looking to fill another need for their growing family, a new van.
