George Floyd memorial draws attention to Lexington Police Accountability
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A memorial to honor the life of George Floyd, one year after his death, was held by the LPD Accountability group. But, the focus for the group was to demand change from the Lexington PD.
“United we stand, divided we fall. United we stand, divided we fall” The group chanted.
Standing together outside the Lexington Police Department…the LPD Accountability group, along with more than a dozen other advocates shouted their demands.
“Answers, transparency, accountability and truth, most importantly the truth” said Activist, Jay Calhoun.
The event not only acknowledged George Floyd, and LPD Accountability demands….but it also honored Liam Long, the teen who was hit by a police car on March 30th after running from police. A social worker said he was in a mental health crisis.
It’s been three weeks since long was discharged from the hospital after a brain bleed from that incident. Long was out for the first time Tuesday to attend the memorial.
“My recovery has been well, I came back, I don’t know why he just doesn’t take me. It’s just not my time to go” said Liam.
“Well we don’t want him to take you” added his mom Kendra.
“It’s just not my time to go” added Liam.
He attended with his mom Kendra, who has been fighting for justice in Liam’s case. She says there is more work to be done for justice in Liam’s case, and that they will continue to be very involved now that he is doing better.
“I’m overwhelmed when I see community support and people that are so kind and I always tell my children pay it forward” said Kendra.
The night was a very powerful and emotional time for them, Liam shedding a tear during the event as the group spoke about his recovery.
“I’m glad Liam Long is still with us” said Kendra.
“I’m fine, I’m here, I’m here momma” added Liam.
“And I’m just so thankful, like I said, for everyone always coming out” Kendra added.
The group taped their posters that read Black Lives Matter and LPD Accountability, among others on the outside of the Lexington Police Department….hoping their voices will be heard.
