Gas line break closes downtown Lexington intersection

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A section of downtown Lexington is closed after an emergency gas line break.

According to city officials, the intersection of West High Street and South Mill Street is closed and the shutdown is expected to last until late Wednesday afternoon.

West High Street is closed between South Upper Street and South Broadway, while South Mill Street is closed between West Maxwell Street and West Vine Street due to additional utility work.

Officials say one lane of traffic may reopen earlier, but drivers should expect delays in the area. Navigation apps such as Waze are directing drivers around the closure.

Drivers traveling along High Street who need to reach Rupp Arena are encouraged to detour using South Limestone to West Main Street and then South Broadway.

The sidewalk along High Street will remain open for pedestrians.

Officials are also urging drivers to avoid downtown travel if possible, especially those heading to the KHSAA Girls Sweet 16 Basketball Tournament at Rupp Arena, and to allow extra time for travel and parking.
