Freeze for Freedom 5k to bring awareness to human trafficking
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – It’s Human Trafficking Prevention Awareness Month and Unshackled by Love Ministries invites the community of Lexington to their Freeze for Freedom 5k run and 1-mile walk on Saturday.
Unshackled by love ministries is a nonprofit that provides help to women leaving the human trafficking industry.
The event begins at 10:00 am on Saturday at Coldstream Park.
The purpose is to bring awareness to human trafficking.
Unshackled by Love Ministries says human trafficking is the second-largest organized crime in America.
They have provided a safe secure environment for 34 women within the last five years.
That includes a one to a two-year program where they learn to heal and much more to find their way back into society.
On the unshackled by love ministries website, they say roughly every two minutes a woman is being sexually assaulted in the United States.
They say the hard truth about sexual assault is that 60% of women haven’t reported it to the police, 30% are victims of sexual exploitation and 7% don’t tell anyone about it.
The organization had a goal to raise $1,000 through the Freeze for Freedom 5k but they have already raised more.
All of that money goes towards supporting the organization and female victims who need help.
