Freedom Farmers’ Market Underway At Lexington VA Medical Center

A special collaboration is making fresh and healthy, local vegetables available to Lexington.

The Freedom Farmers’ Market runs through October.

The VA Medical Center on Leestown Road in Lexington is partnering with Home Grown by Heroes and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture to offer the produce.

Hospital officials said the idea was to bring healthy eating and living to those who work at who are treated at the VA Hospital.

They also said that with the growing popularity of fresh markets, the project was a great addition to its campus on Leestown Road.

"It’s especially nice for people living in the city who don’t have a garden at all," said Pauline Sosby, who was visiting the VA while her husband James had an appointment.

Hospital officials also said many vendors are veterans as well.

"Here I am beyond helpful.  If someone comes in a wheelchair, I go around and help them.  I bag it and wrap it up," said Gina Micciche, a vendor at the market.

The markets go from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every other Friday in July through October.

The last one is scheduled for October 24.
