Free Summer Food Program begins

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Summer Food Service Program, Free Meals for Kids event kicked off Wednesday morning, at 11:30 a.m.

Hosted at Village Branch Library on Versailles Road in Lexington, this event aims to provide food to thousands of meals and snacks to low-income children in the area. The program directed by God’s Pantry Food Bank, and partnered with Fayette County Public Schools, A Fresh Approach and It’s About Kids.

During the school year in Centeral and Eastern Kentucky, thousands of children receive free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch & Breakfast program. When school is out during summer months, those children may no longer have access to the meals they previously relied on.

On a related note, Social Services in the area have spoken up in concern recently, due to the city of Lexington withdrawing funding for God’s Pantry for the next two years.

"Well, we were very disappointed to not be included in that list. And probably a little bit dumbstruck," says Marian Guinn, CEO of God’s Pantry Food Bank.
