Franklin sheriff: Suspect punched deputy after being tased

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ)- The Franklin County sheriff says a deputy had to tase a man during a chase. And the sheriff says the suspect later punched the deputy.

According to Sheriff Pat Melton, a deputy stopped Kenneth McGrew Saturday on Centennial Avenue in Frankfort. Melton says McGrew and a child were on a motorcycle. Deputies say the child was not wearing a helmet.

The sheriff’s office says McGrew was driving on a suspended license, and was wanted on a warrant out of Bullitt County. When the deputy went to arrest McGrew, investigators say he pushed the deputy and ran off. Melton says the deputy then used his taser, but McGrew was able to break one of the wires before taking off again.

Sheriff Melton says the deputy chased McGrew behind a home on Landings Drive. Melton says McGrew then punched the deputy, which led to a physical fight between the two.

According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy was able to get McGrew to the ground, restraining him until Frankfort police officers and other deputies arrived on the scene. Investigators say McGrew was injured, and was treated at a local hospital.

Melton says McGrew was later taken to jail on several charges including driving without registered plates, driving without insurance, driving on a suspended license, fleeing/ evading police, assault of a police officer, wanton endangerment and endangering the welfare of minor.
