Franklin sheriff: Fugitive turns himself in after 43 years on the run
ABC 36 News was the only television station there Monday evening when the man was taken out of a Frankfort home on a stretcher. Sheriff Pat Melton identifies him as Clarence David Moore. Melton says Moore was in prison for larceny when he escaped on May 5, 1971.
Sheriff Melton says Moore called his office Monday and said he is a fugitive. After investigators verified the story, they arrested Moore.
"You can’t make this up. It’s unreal… every day is different in the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Every day’s an adventure," says Melton.
According to the sheriff, Moore worked on a ship for a while before coming to Frankfort. Melton says he gave a false name of Ronnie Dickinson when he was involved in a car crash in 2009.
According to the sheriff, Moore was taken to a hospital to be checked out. From there, he’ll go to jail as North Carolina decides what it wants to do.
