Franklin County man accused of setting fire that killed two sons, arrest citation says

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — New details are emerging in the investigation of a deadly house fire in Franklin County, where two teenage boys were killed. The man now facing charges is their father.

According to an arrest citation from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, 44-year-old Dustin Fields is accused of intentionally setting fire to his home on Flat Creek Road around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, while knowing it was occupied by his two juvenile sons.

Fields has been charged with first-degree arson. The citation states that a K-9 with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) detected accelerants on Fields’ shoes, as well as in several locations inside the home, including the area where the boys’ bodies were found.

Investigators say Fields’ statements about the fire were inconsistent and conflicted with witness accounts.

Fields was arrested the following day and taken into custody just before noon on Thursday.

The Franklin County Coroner’s Office is still working to officially confirm the identities of the two victims. Multiple agencies continue to assist in the investigation, including Kentucky State Police and the State Fire Marshal.
