Frankfort church still cleaning up after flooding

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ)-Members of one Frankfort congregation didn’t let high water keep them from celebrating Easter Sunday.

Now they’re working hard to get back in their own building before the weekend.

"It was a bit of a scare, really,” said Executive Pastor Zack Thurman.

It was a scare that quickly turned into a mess. Water was everywhere. Elkhorn Creek, which surrounds the Buck Run Baptist Church campus on three sides, broke its bank.

Without insurance, it would’ve broken the church’s as well.

"This was Saturday morning. So, Saturday at about 1pm is when it crested,” Thurman said, pointing to a line of debris left on a wall of the basement.

That basement space, complete with boiler, was under around seven feet of water. Rescue quickly yielded to recovery. Now, there’s just clean-up left.

"Speakers, old chairs and stuff that were used. Lots of stuff,” said one young volunteer.

"None of the insurance will cover anything that was down here in this room,” explained another.

And while the flooding was great in size, church leaders say outreach to get things back to normal is far greater.

"Cleaning, pushing, yesterday we had about 28 man hours in our basement across the street alone. College age guys and a few teenagers getting filthy, just doing really hard work that nobody wants to do,” said Thurman.
