Fourteen confirmed deaths from extreme weather

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The death toll from Kentucky’s devastating weekend flooding has risen to 14, Governor Andy Beshear announced Tuesday morning. The governor also shared that 44 counties have submitted written disaster declarations as recovery efforts continue.

The severe flooding has displaced many residents, leaving them without power, and now the state faces another challenge—a looming winter storm and dangerously cold temperatures.

Beshear confirmed that the latest two fatalities were an adult man and woman in Jefferson County, both of whom were believed to be experiencing homelessness and died from hypothermia.

“That should tell all of us, the weather conditions are as dangerous as that water is,” Beshear said.

Officials are urging anyone in need of shelter to contact their local emergency management office for assistance as Arctic temperatures move in. Rescue and relief efforts remain ongoing across the hardest-hit areas.
