Four injured in chemical release, explosion at London Borden plant

LONDON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Four people were injured Wednesday morning after an explosion and chemical release at the Borden plant in London, according to officials.

The London-Laurel County Economic Development Authority shared the following on its Facebook account: “An early morning explosion at Borden plant in London left four people injured. Prayers for each of them.”

According to a press release from the City of London, the London Fire Department responded to the scene, where crews quickly established control and initiated decontamination operations to protect employees and first responders. Firefighters also assisted with hospital decontamination procedures to ensure proper treatment for anyone exposed.

The chemical involved was identified as Hyperflex (Acid Sanitizer), which contains phosphoric acid and nitric acid. While corrosive and capable of causing serious health effects, officials say no life-threatening injuries have been reported.

The London Fire Department said it worked with partnering agencies to contain the hazard, protect the public, and provide medical support.
