Fort Knox soldiers to mark president’s birthday

FORT KNOX, Ky. (AP) — Soldiers from Fort Knox will lay a wreath at the gravesite of President Zachary Taylor to commemorate the anniversary of his birth.

The soldiers will conduct the ceremony Monday at 11 a.m. at the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville.

The Army is tasked with ensuring all former U.S. presidents receive a wreath provided by the White House at their gravesite each year.

Maj. Gen. David W. Puster, commanding general of the 84th Training Command at Fort Knox will host the ceremony. A Fort Knox honor guard from his unit will assist with the wreath laying.

Taylor was the nation’s 12th president. He grew up in Louisville before joining the Army in 1808. Taylor served as president for 16 months before his death in 1850.
