Former UK student found guilty of murder in killing of her boyfriend

NEWPORT , Ky. (WTVQ) — A former University of Kentucky student is found guilty of murdering her boyfriend nearly three years after she shot him at close range.

Around 11: 30 p.m. Thursday, 12 jurors reached a verdict and convicted Lexington native, Shayna Hubers of the crime.

In 2012, Police say, Hubers admitted to shooting her boyfriend, Ryan Poston in self-defense.

Hubers claims she went to Poston’s northern Kentucky home to gather her things after their relationship had ended. Police say, Hubers told them that there was an altercation in which she says Poston, “threw her around the room and hurt her.”

Authorities say Poston was shot six times. Prosecutors argued Hubers was enraged and killed Poston because he wanted to break up with her.

During the two week long trial, Prosecutors included evidence of text messages from Hubers where she says she “wants to shoot him at a gun range and make it look like an accident.”

Several witnesses took the stand throughout the trial, but Hubers did not. “We heard the arguing, some shuffling around and some blunt noises,” said Hubers’ neighbor, Pamela Metz. “ I said to my daughter, one of them shot the other one.”

A Psychiatrist also took the stand and claimed Hubers suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, but Prosecutors claim that might be from her time in jail rather than the killing.

24-year-old, Hubers will be sentenced Friday at 10 a.m.
