Former KY education commissioner gets new job days after resigning

NASHVILLE, Tn. (WTVQ) – Less than a week after resigning, Kentucky’s former education commissioner has a new job out of state.

Wayne Lewis has been named the inaugural dean of Belmont University’s School of Education in Nashville, Tennessee.

“I look forward to joining the students, faculty, staff and leadership in January as we work together to aggressively build on Belmont’s rich tradition of preparing the most important resource in education: teachers,” Lewis said in a statement.

In his new position, the university says Lewis will assist in the transition period of growing the School of Education to be an independent college over the next several years.

Lewis resigned his post as Kentucky’s education commissioner last week during a special meeting called by the newly-appointed Kentucky Board of Education. The board was considering whether or not to fire Lewis from his position. Governor Andy Beshear appointed the new members because he says they will support public education. Lewis and several former board members were advocates of charter schools.
